description Abstract: Habitat criteria based on the theoretical potential to support self‐sustaining wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) populations serve as a more objective guide for determining restoration priorities. We derived criteria from literature sources, examination of restoration projects in other states, and the results of >30 years of wild turkey restoration efforts in Indiana. Wild turkey populations have been restored in both “traditional” and “marginal” habitat types. We reported harvest results relative to 3 levels of habitat quality. Wild turkey population growth and dispersal have been influenced primarily by land use, human population levels, and physiography. Restoration problems related to habitat fragmentation, population isolation, inbreeding depression, and founder effects were incorporated into guidelines for supplemental and interplanting releases in existing populations. Criteria are applicable to other wild turkey restoration projects, especially in the Midwest.
