| Summary: | The COVID-19 pandemic adversely impacted the economic and security status of households. Using a national telephonic survey, South African households were assessed for the impacts of the pandemic on a range of household characteristics. The study was conducted during a period of lockdown between December 2020 and March 2021, and examined whether selected household characteristics, financial distress during the pandemic, and long-term poverty preceding the pandemic, predicted physical assault experienced by household members during the pandemic. The risk for the occurrence of physical assault was assessed using multinomial logistic regression models with several key household financial and poverty factors entered as predictors. Overall, it found that moderate household financial distress and long-term household deprivation superseded the lost income during the pandemic as well as other key household characteristics in the prediction of risk for violence victimisation. Findings highlight the importance of requisite and targeted supportive efforts and resources to address household deprivation to enable the implementation of effective violence prevention strategies and interventions. This study contributes to research knowledge of violence during the pandemic by honing in on several factors, testing the unique effect of these on long-term household deprivation. |
