description In 2013, the action of the Venezuelan army prohibiting an oil prospecting mission, highlighted the sovereignty dispute that persists between this country and Guyana in the Essequibo region: a territory of the Guiana Shield rich in resources. Whether through the current extraction of fossil fuels, or the exploitation of other strategic resources, the Latin American and Caribbean continent will, most likely over this century, see an increase in mining activity which can foreshadow the intensification of rivalries, a fortiori, where a sovereignty dispute persists. Centered on the rivalries for access to resources and the sovereignty of the Essequibo region, this article conducts an analysis of the geopolitical risk, and questions the role that the International Court of Justice can play in the dispute between Guyana and Venezuela.
