| Summary: | Background. Cattle ranching in Norte de Santander is a traditionally developed activity, being an important sector of the departmental economy. Growth has been slow due to multiple factors, such as the ongoing armed conflict in Catatumbo, which has negatively impacted the expansion of rural areas. It is necessary to understand sociodemographic aspects that will allow for a broader range of opportunities for the growth of the activity. Objective. This research aimed to characterize small and medium-sized productions in six subregions of the department from a social perspective and the characteristics of the physical space of the production systems. Methods. Structured surveys were administered to 210 producers located in the municipalities of El Zulia, Arboledas, Ocaña, El Tarra, Pamplona, and Chinácota, taking into account location, land area, development of agricultural activities, academic training, use of skilled labor, among others. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results. Livestock farming has been developed for more than 15 years, but less than 50% of producers have academic training in the agricultural field. Regarding location, more than 50% of farms are located less than or equal to 10 km from urban areas, and 79.05% of properties operate on land areas between 0.5 and 40 hectares with variable topography. Conclusions. The systems employ minimal levels of technological development; however, there is potential for improvement with the implementation of skilled labor, environmentally friendly practices, the availability of basic services, and accessibility to local markets. |
