| description | Effects of different concentrations of Cd on photosynthesis and chlorophyll fluorescence in Pakchoi (Brassica campestris ssp. chinensis L.) were studied in solution culture. The results showed that low concentrations of Cd (0.01, 0.1 mg/L) promoted plant growth, especially more considerably in cultivar Suzhouqing. High concentrations of Cd (10 mg/L) significantly inhibited shoot growth, it did not affect root growth, however, Cd decreased chlorophyll content, which was more remarkable in Suzhouqing than in another cultivar Huqing No.1. Low concentrations of Cd did not significantly affect net photosynthetic rate while high concentrations of Cd considerably reduced it. The reduction in stomatal conductance and increase in intracellular CO<sub>2</sub> (Ci) under high concentrations of Cd indicated that this reduction in net photosynthesis was due to a non-stomatal restriction. Measurement of leaf chlorophyll fluorescence showed that Cd did not influence photochemical efficiency of PSⅡ (Fv/Fm). High concentrations of Cd reduced actual quantum yield of PSⅡ (ΦPSⅡ), photochemical quenching (qP) and electron transport rate (ETR). As a consequence of addition of Cd, non-photochemical quenching (qNP) of Huqing No.1 was increased and that of Suzhouqing was reduced. |
