Description
Summary:This paper examines the representations and the symbolizations made of “women” in the magazines published by two women’s organizations linked to the Communist Party of Tunisia. It does so with the aim of exploring the relationship between the construction of a feminine gender and the rhetoric of a democratic, socialist, plural and inclusive future. It aims to bring to light the tension between the permanence of differential assignments of identity, including gender and race, and the activists’ desire to erase such divisions to promote the collective fight against the Protectorate and to bring class struggle to the fore. This paper proposes the hypothesis that this desire contributed to the emergence of awareness of the oppression of women.
