Acute Kidney Injury After the Concurrent Use of Checkpoint Inhibitors and Proton Pump Inhibitors

As the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (CPIs) in cancer treatment has increased, so has the number of immune-related adverse events (irAEs), such as acute kidney injury (AKI). Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have also been associated with AKI, but PPIs are still consistently prescribed for acid re...

description As the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (CPIs) in cancer treatment has increased, so has the number of immune-related adverse events (irAEs), such as acute kidney injury (AKI). Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have also been associated with AKI, but PPIs are still consistently prescribed for acid reflux and are often administered to patients also receiving CPI therapy. We describe 3 patients who were each receiving both a CPI and PPI and had an AKI within 5 months of concurrent therapy. This suggests that clinicians should be cautious about prescribing CPIs in conjunction with PPIs.
