| Summary: | This article, which is a reflective excerpt from master's research, aims to investigate the presence and characterization of the research problem in different specific research projects for entry into postgraduate programs in the area of History. To this end, we undertake textual analyzes in research projects, identifying the rhetorical steps responsible for presenting the research problem in all fractions of the genre. Furthermore, we conducted contextual analyzes through interviews with doctoral students whose projects were approved, in order to understand their understanding of this specific genre, approaching the research problem. The analyzes were carried out based on the theories of English for Specific Purposes studies (Swales, 1990; Askehave; Swales, 2009); Rhetorical gender studies (Bazerman, 2009; Miller, 2012) and our studies on research projects (Motta-Roth; Hendges, 2010; Barros, 2015; Luca, 2020). Textual analyzes revealed that the research problem is presented and characterized throughout the research project. Finally, this study can contribute to the understanding of this important academic genre, being a crucial means of assessment for entry into doctoral programs. |
