| description | Schools, offices, social housing or prestigious apartments, museums, libraries, theatre, shopping centres… the architectural conversion of former industrial buildings is now an integral part of our daily landscape. These conversions offer original forms, the use of high-quality materials and historical dimensions which, today, nobody thinks of calling into question. This has not always been the case, however. This article, originally published in the book entitled Reconversions, l’architecture industrielle réinventée [Conversions, industrial architecture re-invented] published in 2013 in the collection Images du patrimoine, offers a general introduction to the question of the conversion of industrial buildings and sites. It begins with a contextualisation of this question at the national (French) level, and then at broader, worldwide levels. It sets out to explain how the industrial heritage came to acquire recognition (a necessary precondition for any re-use project), how this new architectural approach appeared and developed, and what are the specific aspects of the issues it raises in terms of the heritage, in economic terms, from the point of view of the requalification of territories and in terms of sustainable development. The article offers a typological overview of industrial architecture with a rich range of new uses to which old factories can be adapted, taking into consideration their more or less limiting morphology. |
