Impact of the mechanized excavation on the slope stability of the "Gacko" open pit

Maintaining the open pit slopes in a stable condition requires compliance between the geometrical parameters of the open pit on one side and the pit-technical conditions, physical-mechanical properties of the rocks and hydrogeological properties of the deposit on the other side. When the underground...

description Maintaining the open pit slopes in a stable condition requires compliance between the geometrical parameters of the open pit on one side and the pit-technical conditions, physical-mechanical properties of the rocks and hydrogeological properties of the deposit on the other side. When the underground activity is located below an open pit, deformation of the open pit slopes can be expected as a result of subsidence caused by the underground mining. For an adequate analysis of the stress-strain states in the massif, it is essential to consider the partial relaxation of the primary stresses in the excavation. Numerical analysis simulates the progress of mining works and stress changes and deformations in the vicinity of the underground room, the amount of subsidence on the ground surface depending on the chosen method of mechanized excavation, i.e. the impact on the open pit slopes. Numerous examples in the world provide a clear warning regarding the possible impact of underground works at the open pit. Analysis the impact of dimensions and spatial position of the wide front panel and column-chamber excavation on the stress-strain state, i.e. stability of the open pit slope, was done on the example of the "Gacko" open pit mine.
