Description
Summary:This article was written by two social science researchers who were themselves diagnosed late with autism and present an “atypical” gender experience. It presents an overview of an epistemological research which examined scientific literature on gender and autism through a critical lens. A collection of 46 publications (articles, Master’s and PhD theses) claiming a feminist approach on autism were considered against the backdrop of the broader academic literature on autism and gender. This led to the conclusion that, despite the way that autistic women and people belonging to gender or sexual minorities are usually ignored by science, the construction of knowledge on autism and gender is gradually evolving. For instance, several studies grounded in feminist approaches to science deconstruct gendered theories of autism (such as the theory of the extreme male brain or the naturalisation of the sex-ratio), while more recent research relates the lived experience of gender and sexuality by autistic persons themselves.
