Description
Summary:During the Peninsular War, the University of Merchants of the City of Mexico offered only small donations to support Felipe V. The cause was their dissatisfaction with the commercial policy of the Spanish Empire. The financial contributions of the corporation became more substantial from the moment that the Consulate, negotiating with the viceroy, obtained an agreement to make them a quid pro quo for the lifting of restrictions on Pacific trade and his support for the capital city to collect the revenue from alcabalas.
