description This study proposes a re-reading of the Perlesvaus and the Conte du Graal in the light of the mescheance and the motif of the Fall which underlies this notion. The theological prism which informs the poetics of the “high books” is multi-faceted, varying from author to author and from work to work. By reviewing these developments, this article seeks to identify the theological and anthropological patterns of the Perlesvaus — a work in which the “historical ambiguity” so artfully depicted in the Mort Artu gives way to a vision of salvation which enhances the human contribution to the fulfilment of God’s design.
