description In the North African Rif, being a youth is implicitly defined as lacking control over land, which is the foundation of honour and responsibility. It is in this context—which radically contrasts accomplished (ariaz) men of honour and irresponsible youths—that the article develops an ethnography of rule transgression, authority defiance and the use of ruses by these youths to achieve their aims. After exploring the tensions characterising relations between sons and fathers, another relationship is analysed: with grandfathers. What is at stake is the transmission of culture and honour. Finally, the article concludes with a detailed study of the role that young men play in marriage rituals, which leave fathers in the margins as the sons announce their symbolic murder in the staging of their reproductive power.
