| description | Offering a sustained examination of the ‘pre-history’ of Francophone Studies, this article begins by exposing the shifting range of meanings harboured in the term ‘French’ as it has been applied to French Studies before treating in more detail the gradual rise of the designation ‘Francophone’ in the field of literary studies. It identifies three main periods, beginning with that of colonial expansion, followed by the twilight years of Empire characterised by a high degree of instability in the terms used to designate writing in French by authors originating outside the Hexagon, and terminating in an account of the institutional and disciplinary context in which the ‘Francophone’ label gained strong purchase in the mid-1990s.S'interrogeant sur la ‘préhistoire’ des études francophones, cet article trace l'évolution du découpage du champ des ‘études de langue française’ aussi bien en français que dans le milieu universitaire anglophone. |
