Description
Summary:This paper proposes a critical appraisal of sources deemed suitable for enquiry into the personnel tied to the seigneurial houses of Late Mediaeval Castile. In so doing it seeks to bring new life to an analysis of the inter-personal networks linked to these aristocratic protégés, and of a functional domestic society as one of the mainstays of the sway held by the elite of this group in Late Mediaeval Castile. To that end it examines the difficulties posed by the lack of serial seigneurial documentation in Castile prior to the second half of the 15th century, when such records began to be kept. What it does is propose methodological alternatives for an approach—chiefly qualitative but also quantitative—to these environments of seigneurial household and patronage from heterogeneous (documentary and literary) and non-serial sources, based on a study of the social milieu of the Infante Fernando de Antequera, his wife Leonor de Alburquerque and their children, the «Infantes de Aragón» (c. 1374-1435).
