Polyaddition systems are particularly suitable for the synthesis of specifically structured network. Examples from the epoxy resin field confirm the influence of specific structural principles and characteristics on the morphology and the physical behaviour of the resulting cross-linked macromolecules.
The polyaddition reactions are discussed upon consideration of the relaxation behaviour of the cross-linked polymers. Furthermore, the importance of the cross-linking density is dealt with. The network structure is submitted to a critical examination by means of penetration measurements within the glass transition region and with the aid of electron microscopic investigations on surfaces of fractures; further the effects arising from globular structures are described. On tempering – little below the glass transition point – selected, strongly cross-linked, amorphous polymers, the formation of a short range orientation, based on the effect of dipoles in the network, can be proved. It is shown, that the incorporation of long-chained crystalline segments or the combination of different amorphous systems have great influence on the morphology and the physical behaviour of the materials.
