Description
Summary:The article views biobanking in France as one way of apprehending the commodification of the human body. It applies a Marxist understanding of commodities to analyse what happens to biological samples once they have been treated by biobanks. Analysis starts with biobanks’ division into two interlinked dynamics: one involving EU efforts to encourage investment in the knowledge economy; and the other relating to early 21st century shifts in French research policies. The study also looks at the interlinkage between biobanks’ institutionalisation and issues relating to their operating costs. The paper ends by examining the pecuniary evaluation of biological samples.
