description Based on literature and testimonies, the article analyzes the life of Franc Jeza (1916–1984), a writer, journalist, and fighter for an independent and democratic Slovenia. A Christian socialist, member of the Liberation Front, and former camp prisoner, Jeza left Yugoslavia after the Second World War, permanently settling in Trieste. The paper discusses his life from his escape to Italy in the autumn of 1948 to his death in Trieste on January 20, 1984. Jeza was not an Italian citizen and had no full-time job, so it was hard for him to make a living, especially as a freelance associate of Radio Trst A and the Novi list weekly; he did outstanding journalistic work as an editor, critic, chronicler, translator, as well as original literary author. But most of all, he is remembered inthe public eye for advocating for a democratic and independent Slovenia.
