description | Introduction: eye diseases are risk factors that cause accidents in older adults.
Objective: to determine the behavior of ocular diseases of the anterior segment and adnexa in the elderly.
Methods: an observational, descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in the Clinic of the Villa Clara Ophthalmology Center from July to December 2022. The universe consisted of 426 patients and the sample was 123. The variables investigated were: age, sex, skin color , history of systemic diseases, history of ocular diseases, ocular symptoms, diseases of the anterior segment and adnexa, municipality of origin and indicated treatment; Absolute and relative percentage frequencies were used.
Results: the age of 70 to 79 years (47.2%), the female sex (61.8%) and the white race (52.8%) predominated. High blood pressure (37.4%) and age-related macular degeneration (27.6%) were evident. Decreased visual acuity occurred in 69.1% and cataract was the predominant disease (43.9%). The Municipality of Santa Clara contributed 83 patients. 67.5% received surgical treatment.
Conclusions: the elderly are vulnerable to suffering from diseases of the anterior segment and adnexes and there is a predominance of women, ages between 70 and 79 years and a history of high blood pressure and age-related macular degeneration. Cataract is the most common disease, which is why the largest number of patients received surgical treatment. The Municipality of Santa Clara is the one with the greatest origin. |
