description Currently, the syndrome of pain dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint is not considered exclusively a local disorder, but rather is considered as a clinical outcome of the combined effect of many factors (local and systemic), which act simultaneously and determine, ultimately, the manifestation of the disease. In the framework of the biopsychosocial concept, a hypothesis has been formulated about the importance of the polymorphism of the COMT and ADRB-2 genes for the development of SDJ TMJs, which make these individuals “vulnerable” to the development of chronic pain syndromes. It was found that a decrease in COMT activity leads to an increase in the level of catecholamimes, in particular, such as adrenaline, which contribute to the formation of persistent pain states by stimulating β2-adrenergic receptors in the peripheral and central nervous system.
