| Summary: | According to Senghor’s theory of “negro-African” languages and literatures –which derives from the famous opposition between “negro emotion” and “Hellenic reason”– the poetic production of black authors is characterized by asyndeton. However, in his own poems, Senghor often employs strongly argumentative discourse articulators such as car and or. This use seems to run counter to theorizing, but a closer analysis of the occurrences reveals that these words are emptied of their syntactic function: they are more akin to interjections and part of a rhythmic and semantic search. Examination of the manuscripts reveals the resemantization of what Senghor called “cement-words”. |
