description The fairy tale “Tinereţe fără bătrâneţe şi viaţă fără de moarte” was collected from the folklore in the 19th century by Petre Ispirescu, the Romanian equivalent of the brothers Grimm. It has since been translated into English and other languages several times, and it narrates the adventures of a prince whose quest is to find eternal youth and everlasting life. Prince Handsome is guided by a winged magic horse, at the same time his advisor and means of transportation. I examine aspects of the interaction between the two characters in the original and two English translations of the story and argue that the horse is a psychopomp and translator of sorts, who assists his human companion in crossing boundaries and undergoing transformation.
