description Rotaviruses of group A are the major cause of diarrhea in young calves. To investigate the percentage ofgroup A rotaviruses in newborn calves and examine their evolutionary relationship with those from otheranimals and humans, we collected 74 fecal specimens from calves of 0-1 month of age with acute diarrheain towns of Colombia. Using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was found that 7% of specimenswere positive for rotaviruses of group A. A representative strain (UJ) was chosen to determine its nucleotide and to deduce amino acid sequences of VP7 gene. Nucleotide sequence of UJ VP7 gene was aligned withcorresponding sequences from 15 other strains, including 2 from cattle, 4 from swine, 6 from humans, and 1 each from chickens, dogs, and rabbits, by using Clustal W. Phylogenetic analysis was performedwith the MEGA analytical package. UJ strain clusters with a group A rotavirus strain (SI-B8) recentlyisolated from a calf in Slovenia in the neighbor-joining tree. UJ VP7 gene shares 84% and 70% amino acidsequence identity with the corresponding gene of the recently isolated bovine strains SI-B8 in Sloveniaand PP-1 in the United Kingdom. Identities in amino acid sequence between 48-73% were found withrotavirus of group A strains from humans and other animals, including swine, dogs, and rabbits. To ourknowledge, this is the first study to detect and characterize a bovine group A rotavirus in Colombia.Findings may increase our understanding of burden of viral gastroenteritis in calves and allow us todevelop strategies to prevent and control this important livestock disease.
