| description | The objective of this article is to analyze the institutionalization of the first social science courses in Brazil considering the circulation of foreign and Brazilian professors in the country throughout the 1930s. Thus, the aim is to make a comparative study of the institutions and courses of social sciences founded in the 1930s in some institutions—the University of São Paulo, Free School of Sociology and Politics of São Paulo, University of the Federal District and University of Brazil—as well as of the practices and representations of the professors of these institutions, in order to identify the factors conditioning the adherence to the North American and French models by the Brazilian elites. The hypothesis is that the opposition between France and the United States for intellectual domination in Latin America is homologous to the polarization of Brazilian regional ruling elites for intellectual legitimacy in national higher education. In other words, the dominant ruling elites prefer French social sciences, while the dominated ones adopt North American references in order to legitimize their academic position. |
