| Summary: | Loiasis is an infection of the submucosal and subcutaneous tissue caused by the filarial nematode, Loa loa, transmitted by day-biting tabanid flies (Chrysops [deer fly, mango fly, or horse fly]). We report a rare case of periocular subcutaneous infestation by adult L. loa in a 22-year-old male from a coastal area of Kerala, India, with no history of travel to endemic places. Loiasis is endemic to African countries, with few sporadic cases reported from scattered areas of the Indian population. This is the first reported case of ocular loiasis from Kerala. We have described the histopathological details of L. loa and its differentiation from orbital dirofilariasis. |
