Description
Summary:Objective To investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome(MS)and associated factors in the adults in Guangxi, and analyze the epidemiological characteristics of MS.Methods One city was chosen for sampling each in the east, west, south, north of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region using cross-sectional study through the stratified multi-stage cluster random sampling.A cross-sectional survey was undertaken in 7 924 residents over 18 years of age.The cluster sampling method was employed to recruit participants in Guangxi. The MS was defined by IDF 2005.Results The prevalence of MS was 7.14%.The age-adjusted rate of MS was 6.77%.The prevalence was 4.38%in male and9.56%in female. The difference in prevalence of MS between male and female was significant.MS prevalence aged ≥40 years old investigator was significantly higher than the age<40 years old investigator(P<0.01),showing an increased trend with the age growing(P<0.01).The prevalence of central obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, high triglycerides and low HDL-C was 17.5%,18.68%,19.18%,24.58% and 8.8% respectively.Gender differences appeared in all of the components of MS except for hyperglycemia(P<0.05).The multivariable stepwise analysis extracted gender(female),history of kidney disease, blood pressure, waist circumference, fasting blood uric acid level, fasting glycaemia level and triglyceride as major risk factors for MS,and hip circumference and blood HDL-C level as protective factors for MS.Conclusions The prevalence of MS was 7.14%.The age-adjusted rate of MS was 6.77%,gender(female),history of kidney disease, blood pressure, waist circumference, fasting blood uric acid level, fasting glycaemia level and triglyceride are major risk factors for MS.
