description As religious unrest went on increasing in 16th-century France, theatrical writing came to be used as part of the pamphlet war between Protestants and Catholics.Theatrical form made theological debates easier and quicker to spread, thus facilitating the expression of religious dissent. There was a great diversity of propaganda plays, both ideologically and formally, the weapons and targets of which can be compared to those found in other forms of satirical discourse. However, it is in the persuasive strategies at work in those plays that their specificity is to be found. Indeed, theatrical performances are a way of literally embodying values in times of crisis, as well as celebrating a community of chosen people.
