Description
Summary:Faced with a process of intense deagrarianization, the agrarian question in Mexico, the main social demand in the post-revolutionary years, has dwindled to the point of almost disappearing from the national public sphere. However, its importance resurfaces when it comes to implementing megaprojects in indigenous and marginal regions of the country. There, land tenure, generally of the ejido or communal type, brings back the agrarian question in its relation to socioeconomic development. In this paper we explore to what extent and in what sense a leftist and "post-neoliberal" federal government has promoted a change of approach in national agrarian policy. To this end, we contrast institutional discourses and practices directed at the agrarian sector, and identify social resistance to change in the Yucatan Peninsula, where the "Mayan Train", one of the regime's flagship megaprojects, is being implemented.
