| description | This article analyses the meandering maternal trajectories of upper-middle-class women with a child who was in psychiatric care during adolescence. The case studies reveal the extent to which the mothers’ engagement with the children’s upbringing, care and education evolves as they face new problems and confront new socialization institutions. It transpires that women are not institutionalised as mothers once and for all, with the corresponding practices and feelings, and that the way they perceive themselves changes. It also becomes apparent that gender and class mould the maternal trajectories. Therefore, these case studies are a good starting point for researching maternity not only as a social condition but also as a socially regulated process. |
