Summary:To understand Spanish anarchism in clandestinity (1874-1881) requires reexamining new pactices and organizational changes which allowed its survival. This article studies the regional conferences (conferencias comarcales) which took place then; they fostered the organization of small cells under the guidance of committed militants, despite the dramatic decline in regular membership. Secrecy, autonomy and centrifugalism may explain such issues as the Black Hand.
