Effect of cottonseed hull on growth performance and tissue residues of gossypol in fine-wool male sheep

| Summary: | Forty-eight fine-wool, weanling male sheep aged 3 months with average body mass of (19.22±1.20) kg were randomly divided into three groups, which were fed with the basal diet consisted of concentrated feed, silage maize, alfalfa and reed (control group), and the basal diet with the cottonseed hull replacing 50% reed (group 1) and 100% reed (group 2), respectively. The effects of dietary cottonseed hull on growth performance and gossypol residues in tissue of fine-wool male sheep were investigated for 8 months. During the period of experiment, three sheep of each group were slaughtered humanly to collect tissue samples in 5, 7, 9, 11-month-old, respectively. The results showed that no significant differences in average daily gain, slaughter ratio and pure mutton ratio were observed between control and cottonseed hull-exposed treatment (P>0.05). Compared with control group, carcass and pure mutton mass of group 1 increased by 13.4% (P<0.05) and 13.6% (P<0.05) respectively in 11-month-old, so did group 2 increased by 24.2% (P<0.05) and 24.4% (P<0.05) respectively. Moreover, gossypol residues in the tissues of sheep increased with the increase of dietary cottonseed hull contents and the prolongation of exposed period. Gossypol accumulated in sampled tissues was the order as follows: testis > liver > kidney > spleen > longest dorsal muscle > gluteal. The results above indicate that suitable cottonseed hull can be used as a feed safely, and the residues of gossypol in testicular tissue can be used as monitoring indicators of gossypol poisoning. |
