Description
Summary:This study examines the extent of energy deprivation and its impact on health and education outcomes of rural households in Kano State, Nigeria. The research employs a survey design by administering semi-structured questionnaires on rural households. Descriptive statistics and the Tobit regression model were utilized for data analysis. The paper develops a Multidimensional energy poverty index based on reviewing the existing literature to suit rural households in Nigeria. The findings of the paper reveal that a significant amount of households live in energy deprivation. However, the regression results show that energy poverty has a significant impact on the health and education outcomes of the household. Thus, access to clean energy is paramount for human capital development. Therefore, policymakers should intensively accelerate access to electricity and modern cooking facilities for rural households. The vulnerable groups have to be prioritized in the policy interventions for access to clean energy.
