| Summary: | This paper analyzes how a number of scientific discoveries were experimented and/or staged in end-of-year theatrical revues. Based on a large corpus of shows from the Malpertuis archives, it aims to demonstrate that progress served a dual purpose in this type of shows: to amaze thanks to technical effects, and make the audience laugh when progress was presented as a topical subject. The study of the staging of technical discoveries at the turn of the century also allows a better understanding of issues linked to the revue as a genre, in terms both of poetics and of the relationship with the audience. |
