| Summary: | Newer dental materials are being explored and developed through scientific studies to overcome the limitations of existing ones and also to optimize the dental treatment outcomes. In context of caries management, the application of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) agent is painless and does not need of cavity removal or excavation. SDF use in caries prevention eventually improves the quality of life of the dental patients who show limited cooperative behavior or have limited access to dental care or treatments, i.e., young pediatric patients. In addition, several beneficial treatment facets have been unveiled by the recent studies in adults and geriatric dental patients. The current literature reveals many studies exploring various potential applications and advancements of SDF and its impact on teeth and various dental materials. However, there is a lack of comprehensive review summarizing or highlighting the relevant findings of recent published studies Hence, the aim of the present review was to present and summarize the findings from current evidence-based literature in this context by extensively exploring the current published studies in electronic databases. The findings from the available literature have been presented in narrative way under following appropriate headings. Various novel applications and advancements of SDF with addition of potassium iodide and glutathione and its impact on primary and permanent teeth and also on several properties of various dental materials (glass ionomer cement, composite, and adhesives) used for dental caries have been reported by current studies. Furthermore, various advancements in SDF as irrigating solution and its impact in endodontic field have been highlighted in recent studies. |
