| Summary: | Evidence is presented by means of flash photolysis experiments that aryl cations are real intermediates in the photolysis of para substituted aryldiazonium salts (Et2N, OMe, Cl, NO2) in aqueous solution. These short-lived species exhibit absorption maxima in the range of 400 to 500 nm. The rate constants of the cation reactions with water correlate excellently with the σ+ constants; they become smaller on addition of neutral salts. Oxygen and variation of pH-values have very small effects.
