Summary:The objective was to investigate the global challenges in shaping learning environments geared toward strengthening academic performance as a global indicator of educational quality. This was a qualitative analysis, based on a systematic review model, using 50 digital scientific documents from the 2017–2023 period, from Sciencedirect, Redalyc, Scopus, Scielo, Google Scholar, Dialnet, Amelica, Elsevier, and institutional repositories. The dimensions of analysis were: nature of learning environments and their evolution in the pedagogical context; relationship of these environments to performance improvement; and current and future challenges in the design of these environments. It was found that learning environments are directly proportional to effective academic performance. It is concluded that the challenge lies in designing environments characterized by strong social interactions; highly trained teachers; teamwork; technological mediation; social inclusion; self-learning; feedback; knowledge generation; and recreation.
