While the issue is highly political, opposing self-proclaimed supporters of order with activists who denounce violations of human rights, sociologists have for many years been pointing to malfunctions and a problematic relationship between the police and the public. The aim of this issue of Cahiers d'histoire is to open a dialogue between historians and sociologists, and to reflect on the characteristics of a democratic order over the long term, from the Revolution to the 21st century.
