| Summary: | This paper analyses the Declaration du roi de Navarre and considers the context and the manners of its publication in July 1585. By this Declaration Henri of Navarre intends to protest publicly against the accusations expressed by the Catholic League and to declare his loyalty to the King. This article focuses on public and private uses of handwritten and printed texts by a noble faction which tries to influence the balance of forces in the future military conflict and to legitimate its own commitment. Otherwise, it seeks to apprehend a thought of action that underlies the acts and discourses of Henry of Navarre and his counsellor, Philippe Duplessis-Mornay. This thought enhances the ability to adapt to circumstances understood as a part of God’s plan and it promotes multiple-possibility political calculation. However, it affirms the permanence and stability of the Noble and Christian values. In these context, the publication of Navarre’s posture based on a sense of noble honour aims at revealing the force field of the future war. |
