Description
Summary:The rapid urban development in Alexandria has resulted in the creation of numerous underutilized spaces beneath bridges, often referred to as "lost urban spaces." These areas are frequently misused and neglected, but they hold significant potential for environmentally sustainable urban design. Depending on their location and community needs, these spaces can be transformed to serve various purposes. Despite challenges such as limited accessibility, safety concerns, environmental degradation, and social issues, these spaces present opportunities for revitalization and adaptive reuse. Reclaiming these spaces requires community engagement, placemaking, and collaboration among stakeholders to enhance their value for surrounding communities. This research aims to develop vibrant, resilient, and inclusive spaces under bridges that address environmental degradation, social inequality, and economic instability. By doing so, these areas can be transformed from neglected, unsafe zones into functional, safe, and sustainable environments that cater to community needs. Developing sustainable spaces under bridges involves thorough assessment and planning to outline clear goals, objectives, and strategies that integrate environmental, social, and economic considerations. A holistic approach is essential to ensure these transformations maximize benefits for communities. Key factors include addressing safety, improving accessibility, and fostering social cohesion. Successful revitalization efforts require collaboration among government agencies, community organizations, private sector stakeholders, and residents. By working together, stakeholders can unlock the potential of these spaces, creating inclusive and sustainable environments that contribute to more equitable urban development.
