Description
Summary:The Revista do Globo, a biweekly magazine, was one of the most influential publications of the Rio Grande do Sul in the first half of the 20th century. Among the many pictures then published, this paper will focus on the political ones, especially in the early years of the magazine. As textual signals lost strength when used to excessively praise some public figures, photographs were used to cast the latter in a positive light. From the beginning, photoreporters were asked to take pictures that would highlight political events and political leaders. The image of Getúlio Vargas offers a typical case. Getúlio Vargas became president in 1930 and stayed in power for the following 15 years. This work will analyse the documentary photographs of Getúlio Vargas which were published in Revista do Globo through the 1930s. The two visual and conceptual axes which will be used are the possibility of public representation and social protagonism.
