description This article focuses on the criticisms and controversies that emerged in France in early 2010s around misoprostol/Cytotec, a synthetic prostaglandin that has never had a marketing authorization for its many uses in gynecology-obstetrics. I analyze the ways in which Cytotec is (de)constructed by users/victims, ob-gyns and regulatory experts, with regard to its benefits/risks, its dangerousness/innocuousness, its legality/illegality. I focus in particular on the multiple regimes of knowledge/ignorance promoted by the different stakeholders of the debate. This article thus aims to contribute to the analysis of the constitution of public problems around off-label drugs in a field –reproductive health– in which the question of risk regulation can not be disconnected from gendered construction of medical knowledge and ignorance on women’s bodies.
