Description
Summary:This study investigates the subtle forms of discrimination in the German language, known as microaggressions, which can manifest both grammatically and lexically. In an increasingly diverse society, language plays a crucial role in either promoting or obstructing inclusion. While previous studies have acknowledged the impact of the generic masculine and stereotypical language patterns, everyday microaggressions that reinforce exclusion – particularly on social media – have been insufficiently explored. This analysis seeks to demonstrate how language sustains unconscious biases and marginalizes specific groups, such as women and LGBTQ+ communities. The research questions focus on identifying specific linguistic structures that contribute to exclusion and exploring alternatives for more inclusive communication. The study employs discourse analysis to examine examples from social media, everyday conversations, and public communications. The findings indicate that certain language patterns, such as the generic masculine, continue to reinforce unequal power dynamics and contribute to the invisibility of minority groups. Furthermore, social media often amplifies these microaggressions but also serves as a platform for raising awareness about inclusive language. The study offers practical approaches for promoting language policies that support inclusivity and reduce marginalization, emphasizing the importance of revising language use to create a more just and inclusive society.
