| Summary: | Abstract: We evaluated the ability of a computer simulation model to project wild turkey (Meleagris gallapavo silvestris) numbers by determining if projections were correlated with winter counts of turkeys on a study area in south‐central Iowa. Four different levels of model complexity were evaluated and all were positively correlated with the winter counts. Projections from the model using average survival rate estimates and year‐specific fecundity estimates provided the best fit. The model was adopted for regional use by using survey data collected annually as an index to fecundity rates. The projections from these models are examined to demonstrate how they might be used to answer population management questions. |
