description This article investigates the flow of enslaved people from colonial Brazil to Lisbon between 1751 and 1761, the period immediately preceding the prohibition of the slave trade to Portugal. Based on previously unpublished data from the Lisbon customs office, the study identifies the arrival of 4,644 enslaved individuals during this period. It examines their age and gender distribution, ports of origin in Brazil, assessed market prices, and customs duties imposed. Additionally, it seeks to determine the profile of those involved in their transportation, who numbered in the hundreds over the few years analyzed. The study concludes that the Portuguese metropole continued to be supplied with enslaved people through a regular and active trade, though one that was loosely organized, dispersed among a large number of agents, and based on small-scale operations – a “petty” slave trade.
