Gibberellins application or floor management methods. Who has astronger influence on the yield and fruit quality of pear?

From 2020 to 2022 we evaluated effect of mulching with wheat straw, herbicide fallow (GLP), gibberellins (GA4+7) and completely grassed area applications on yield (Y), fruit quality and antioxidant acivity of ‘Abbé Fétel’ pear grown in Čačak region (western Serbia). Description
Summary:From 2020 to 2022 we evaluated effect of mulching with wheat straw, herbicide fallow (GLP), gibberellins (GA4+7) and completely grassed area applications on yield (Y), fruit quality and antioxidant acivity of ‘Abbé Fétel’ pear grown in Čačak region (western Serbia). Results showed that mulch, herbicide strip and GA4+7 treatments statistically similarly increased Y and fruit weight (FW) compared to the grassed area, whereas the impact of treatments on fruit dimensions, length/diameter (L/D) ratio and protein content was not significant. In general, GLP generated the highest values of soluble solids (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), cellulose, chlorophyll (Chl), vitamin C (Vit C), total phenolic (TPC), total flavonoid (TFC) contents and antioxidant activity, and the worst sugars, sweetness index (SI), pH juice and total carotenoids levels. Mulch induced the lowest SSC, ripening index (RI), cellulose, Chl, carotenoids, TPC and TAC but relatively good amounts of TA, pH juice, sugars, SI and Vit C. The GA4+7 generated the highest values of pH juice, RI and SI, all sugars and carotenoids content but promoted the lowest cellulose, Chl and Vit C amounts. Grassed area induced mainly the lowest or moderate to low values of the most properties evaluated. Correlations between some fruit quality properties were found to be significant and can serve to predict each other while heath map and principal component analysis (PCA) as a statistical tool can help to segregating treatments with the best properties. Overall, the results showed that GLP and GA4+7 in relation to mulch and grassed area (de facto living mulch) more positively affected yield, fruit quality attributes and antioxidant capacity of ‘Abbé Fétel’ pear.
