| description | This article explores the heuristic and critical power that the concept of emotional labour holds. Is emotional labour a form of work? Does it require conscious effort and intentional, rational strategies? What issues arise when emotional labour takes place in the productive sphere and in cooperative and subordinate relationships? Does it generate emotions? And what statuses and roles should be attributed to emotions in these change processes occurring at and through work?Following this epistemological reflection, an empirical study conducted in an academic environment was carried out that demonstrates, despite defensive denial and pervasive fear, the diversity of emotions and their active role in work. Emotions are seen to perform a connecting and resisting function. By adopting a relational definition of emotions, one can thus conceive of a form of emotional labour that, though unintentional, is nonetheless crucial for shaping and understanding work relationships and occupational dynamics. |
