Description
Summary:The general function of the determinant is usually described by linguists and grammarians in terms of “actualization”, referring explicitly or implicitly to the passage of a sign from a “potential” to an “effective” status. This vision is anchored in theorisations by G. Guillaume and C. Bally, based on Saussure’s language/speech dichotomy. The usefulness of the concept of actualization, however, raises questions insofar as the value of “not actualization” is not associated with the absence of determinant. Thus, it is necessary to go beyond the explanations inspired by these contributions in order to understand the functional difference between nominal expressions with and without determinant. We postulate that the criterion of focalization is useful to achieve this objective. We show that G. Guillaume’s writings contain explanations that are in line with the analysis in terms of (de)focalization that we propose.
