Summary:Abstract Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) is a type of non-coding RNA with a length greater than 200 nucleotides. Classic research suggests that lncRNAs do not encode proteins. In recent years, with the advancement of high-throughput RNA sequencing technology and omics analysis, researchers have found that many lncRNAs have short open reading frames (sORFs) that encode functional micropeptides. By regulating key biological processes such as transcription and translation, these micropeptides play important roles in the different stages of the occurrence and development of various diseases, such as cancer. Micropeptides have a small molecular weight, simple structure, and high biological activity, making them potentially valuable for drug development. This article mainly focuses on the prediction and identification methods, biological functions, and molecular mechanisms of lncRNA-encoded micropeptides, aiming to provide new ideas for the early diagnosis, effective treatment, and prognostication of malignant tumors.
