description | Sanctuaries of Demeter in the Peloponnese are home to certain types of rituals, which nature often imposes concealment. Therefore, it is possible to determine the existence of several levels of borders protecting secret ceremonies. To install sanctuaries away from urban centres constitutes a first mark of isolation and allows, furthermore, to use the natural features of the land: mountain slopes, woods or caves offer an additional layer of cover. The boundaries can also be built: high walls sometimes enclose cult areas in urban context, which can contain a sacred grove as well to ensure maximum intimacy. Buildings are conceived especially to harbour rituals that need to be hidden from a certain category of people (man or non-initiates). Finally, several elements are to be dissimulated from worshippers: it is sometimes absolutely forbidden to see the cult statue, to witness the sacrifice or to enter a certain part of the sanctuary. Hence, boundaries endorse diverse functions within the cults of Demeter and divide the population of worshippers into different categories. |
